The traditional dot-com approach is no longer cutting it. Nine in ten American teens own a smartphone and so rather than creating a URL that’ll never be clicked on, digital fashion and lifestyle publication 

 on all Gen Z’s favourite channels – Snapchat, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter. The Huffington Post also has its sights set on engaging Gen Z girls, launching a newsletter called 

 with content that doesn’t appear online, instead bringing exclusive news and celebrity gossip straight to their inbox.

TV producers are adapting too. Norwegian show 

 – which at its peak attracted 1.3 million viewers – was created for a generation who aren’t used to a schedule. The teen drama unfolds in real-time, just like it would in real life. The characters also all have their own social media accounts so that the 

 of Gen Zers with an Insta account can check in with them whenever they want.

While it might be assumed that this generation is too immersed in social channels for fiction, 80% of young people say they enjoy e-books. But with US teens only spending four minutes reading per day, 

 is a mobile app that encourages bookworms by providing short stories that play out through text messages. 

 also takes this fast fiction approach to children’s learning, offering up stories in SMS format.

Stuck to their smartphones and accustomed to watching what they want, when they want, broadcasters have struggled to adapt to Gen Z’s TV viewing habits. But Skam, a Norwegian teen drama, is demonstrating how ‘real-time’ episodes and social media integration can keep teens hooked on a show.
