 backfired and it was exposed for upping its ‘diverse representation’ via tokenism, while a backlash from the LGBT community forced 

 to withdraw from a role playing a trans woman.

Conversely, people are putting their energy into supporting intentionally inclusive media. Thanks to the backing of black communities across the globe, 

became one of the highest-grossing superhero films of all time, and the box office success of 

 – the first movie with an all-Asian cast since 1993 – redressed the discrimination that saw Asians or Asian-Americans playing just 3.9% of characters in the top 800 films released between 2005 and 2015. As people continue to show up for what Hollywood has previously been content to overlook, studios and filmmakers are under pressure to take an earnest approach to reaching increasingly ‘woke’ audiences.
