How communities are saving grassroots music venues

The widespread closure of small- and medium-sized concert halls across the UK has left the grassroots music industry in a critical condition – but DIY, community-led spaces are leading a fightback. How are they adapting their offerings to get punters through the door and keep the lights on?

Craig Clark

Craig Clark is a volunteer at DIY Space for London. He began by helping to build and decorate the space in 2015 and is currently organising the First Timers festival. He works for music charity Heart n Soul.

Richard Short

Richard Short is the artistic director at Centrala, a multi-purpose venue in Digbeth, Birmingham, that was founded by the Polish Expat Association to present socially-engaged contemporary arts.

Thomas Theodore is a London-based writer and researcher. He previously lived in Berlin and enjoys reading and writing about music, sport and wider culture. He has a degree in PPE from Oxford University.
