How have tattoos gone mainstream?

Once considered the mark of rebels and degenerates, tattoos have become so ubiquitous that studies suggest many parents wouldn’t flinch if their child’s teacher visibly sported one. How has this form of self-expression become socially acceptable, and what does the future of the sector hold?

Dr. Matthew Lodder

Dr. Matthew Lodder is a senior lecturer in art history and theory, and director of American Studies at the University of Essex. His research primarily concerns the application of art-historical methods to the history of Western tattooing from the 17th century to the present day. He is the author of the upcoming book ‘Tattoo: An Art History’.
