Why are Americans developing a taste for high-abv beer?

Sober-curiosity has received much media attention, but sales of high-abv beer are also on the rise – with the cost of living crisis, rating websites, and inquisitive palates all contributing to the growing appeal of high-alcohol brews. How can brands capitalize on their expanding popularity?

Stephen Beaumont

Stephen Beaumont is a veteran beer and spirits writer and the author or co-author of 15 books, including three editions of the award-winning best-seller The World Atlas of Beer. He has provided insight and analysis to Just Drinks, Brewing and Beverage Industry Business, and Global Drinks Intel, among other publications, and was the 2022 winner of the British Guild of Beer Writers award for Best Beer Business Communication.

Tom Bobak

Tom Bobak is the founder and editor-in-chief of American Craft Beer, a national craft beer news, lifestyle, and entertainment site based in Washington, DC. Founded in 2012, the publication targets the younger segment of the market, aged 22 to 44.

Suzanne Schalow

Suzanne Schalow is co-founder of Craft Beer Cellar, a modest group of craft beer bottle shops and taprooms, located throughout the US from Vermont to Virginia to Florida. Schalow is also director of operations for Craft Beer Initiative, Craft Beer Cellar’s flagship location in Belmont Massachusetts, and Trinktisch, also located on the Belmont campus.

Jacopo Mazzeo

Dr. Jacopo Mazzeo is a freelance wine and drinks journalist and consultant.
He regularly contributes to leading trade and consumer publications including Wine Enthusiast, Whisky Magazine, Decanter, Meininger, Club Oenologique, Harper's, Pix Wine, and Good Beer Hunting. He consults on consumer trends and marketing strategy and offers copywriting services to drinks firms and agencies. Jacopo is a former sommelier, he judges international wine, beer, and spirits competitions, and sat twice on the board of directors of the British Guild of Beer Writers. Before he embraced full-time journalism, he studied musicology at the University of Bologna and took a PhD at the University of Southampton.
