What's fuelling the diversification of 'masc style'?

Butch lesbians have long been neglected in terms of cultural representation. But with the conversation on gender identity becoming more complex and encompassing non-binary and gender non-conforming people, masc style is on the rise. How are beauty and fashion brands reacting to this shift?

Finnegan Shepard

A trans writer, entrepreneur, and ex-classicist, Finnegan Shepard is the founder and CEO of Both&, the creator of Limns, the author of Tilt, and the co-author of Runts, a play that is debuting at the Spring 2023 NY Theatre Festival.

Vic Parsons

Alix Genter

An independent scholar and freelance academic editor, Alix Genter is currently completing a book manuscript on butch-femme lesbian culture in the mid-20th century. Their expertise as an academic is lesbian history, specifically butch-femme lesbian history, and they earned their PhD in US women's and gender history.

Having published two books on queer culture, Queer Intentions (Picador, 2019) and We Can Do Better Than This (Vintage, 2021), Abraham has talked about LGBTQ+ culture everywhere from Sky News to BBC Radio 4 to the Southbank Centre, and regularly delivers LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusion talks for brands.
