How is the 4B movement shaking up South Korea?

The 4Bs is a niche group of women who are taking steps in reaction to the oppression they and other women face in South Korea. How is this movement changing attitudes among South Korean women, and what can brands do to learn about the wider gender landscape through them?

Gaeul Baek

Gaeul Baek is an activist living in Seoul who is working to eradicate digital sexual violence. She holds a masters degree in social studies and is the publisher and editor-in-chief of RADish, a radical feminist magazine.

Hawon Jung

Hawon Jung is a former Seoul correspondent for the AFP news agency and author of Flowers of Fire: The Inside Story of South Korea’s Feminist Movement (2023).

Gouri Sharma

Gouri Sharma is an internationally renowned independent journalist from London living in Berlin writing for international media sites including Al Jazeera English and Deutsche Welle. Amid a career spanning nearly two decades, including five years on the production desk for Al Jazeera's flagship media critique show The Listening Post, Gouri now writes on issues such as race, culture, migration, history, and sexual health and wellness. With each report, she aims to draw out the individual story amid the wider political or historical context; centring the human story is a priority, in particular amplifying the voices of those from marginalised communities whose stories are not as visible.
