How Indian cinema’s makeover is winning over fans

Lights, camera, action! Indian cinema is undergoing a dramatic transformation as regional films step into the limelight, outshining Bollywood. With the dynamic rise of OTT platforms and a shift towards more diverse storytelling, filmmakers are having to push the envelope – both on and off the screen. As the industry deals with gender representation and navigates political narratives, how is it reinventing itself to stay ahead?

Ravi Guria

Ravi Guria is an award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter with over two decades of experience. A graduate of the Xavier Institute of Communications, Mumbai, he has honed his craft through workshops with acclaimed mentors, including Tom Abrams and Slawomir Idziak. His notable achievements include winning a Platinum Award for Obscene Trial at the 2022 IFP Festival and multiple awards for his short film Typewriter. Ravi’s music video ‘Mumba’ also earned him 1st Runner-Up at the 2022 Music Video Project Awards.

Sweta Mishra

Sweta Mishra is a seasoned screenwriter with over two decades of experience, having transitioned from an assistant director to a writer of fiction and documentaries. During her notable tenure as a showrunner at Star India Pvt. Ltd, she led innovative shows including Saraswatichandra and Siya Ke Ram. A graduate of Hindi Literature from Miranda House, Delhi University, Sweta’s journey from Bokaro Steel City to Mumbai’s entertainment industry has been dynamic and fulfilling. Recently, she has focused on writing web series for top production houses such as T-Series and Red Chillies, while also exploring audio fiction, novel writing, and children’s stories.

Kanishtha Mehta

Kanishtha is a practising lawyer and a freelance writer based in India. With a knack for dissecting intricate issues, she creates strong research-based narratives and brings substance and depth to every piece she undertakes. Hailing from the law firm life, almost unscathed, she takes on all kinds of nuanced projects – from research to editorial, courtroom to canvas. She focuses on writing about a myriad of topics with a bold and (analytically) empathetic angle.
