With the world’s population migrating to cities and sharing schemes becoming an established norm, the portion of those who see the outright purchase of a car as a necessity continues to drop. In the UK, car sales up to March 2018 slumped by almost 16% year-on-year. And with only 33% of 17- to 20-year-olds even applying for licenses, some are failing to see the benefit in using cars at all. In the US, even Uber is expanding beyond auto transport with the announcement of UberRental, which will incorporate bike sharing.

According to Citymapper founder Azmat Yusuf, the navigation app is used on half the smartphones in London – meaning the company knows a lot about where, when and how people are moving around the city. Now, it's using that knowledge to launch a pop-up bus route.
