There was a time when being ‘cultured’ also meant being well-educated and wealthy, but in a post-internet landscape, barriers have been broken down. Connoisseurship has become a pastime for the masses and education is just a click away. But offline, the democratisation of culture is being held back. Between 2012 and 2013, 90% of funding to cultural organisations in the UK by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport benefited London.

Bike sharing schemes enable urbanites to get around in a cheap and eco-friendly way – but they’re often inaccessible to those with disabilities. Adaptive Biketown, a scheme run in Portland, Oregon, aims to change this, letting disabled individuals rent a cycle that meets their specific needs.

“Western mainstream media create and perpetuate idealised versions of beauty and appearance and present them to us as ‘real,’” says Tracey Thornborrow, a lecturer in psychology at the University of Lincoln. “Of course, people are not as homogeneous as the media would have us believe.” In response to such unrealistic ideals, a growing number of people are demanding ‘realness’ from media producers and advertisers.

In Brazil, the World Health Organisation is predicting that the number of people with hearing impairments will continue to increase. In reaction, Samsung is creating an app for deaf people that aims to make the theatre experience more enjoyable by adding real-time subtitles.
