The city of Milan has invited university students to redesign public spaces in an effort to restore the urban fabric and spotlight sustainability. As community and environmental sentiments grow among young people, the way they move through shared spaces is shifting values, concerns and priorities.

As part of the Students Reinventing Cities initiative, university students across the globe have been invited to take part in redesigning a flyover area around Corvetto, a neighbourhood in Milan that is undergoing regeneration. For the project, the county of Milan has partnered with C40 Cites, an organisation that collaborates with young people to redesign urban areas with sustainability and community cohesion in mind.

With two-thirds of young people worried about their generation's future, 84% of young people surveyed  “at least moderately worried” with nearly 60%  “very or extremely worried” about future prospects, there's a renewed vigour from younger demographics to enact change. And for the 7 in 10 young people worried about the climate crisis, they feel as if they can do something about it and want to make a difference.

Younger generations increasingly expect authentic and localised support when tackling big societal issues. By giving them a voice through purpose-driven opportunities that inspire creative solutions, they are helping to drive change and actively contribute to building better futures for their cities and communities.
