A growing community of Brooklyn moms has bonded over amateur skateboarding, using the sport as a way to rejuvenate and temporarily escape the responsibilities of parenting. Formed with a desire for community connection after the pandemic, the Brooklyn Skate Moms have established a supportive network that values trial and error and emphasizes inclusion.

For many, joining the skateboarding group has provided support during difficult times and enabled the women to rediscover their identities in a new light. "When skateboarding came into my life, I was in the middle of this really hard part of my separation, and it just became a place where I can learn about myself in different ways," Lara Alcantara Lansberg, a member of the community, shared with The New York Times.

Mainstream media has historically overlooked the full spectrum of the motherhood experience, and according to a 2023 BabyCenter survey, nearly a quarter of mothers feel disconnected from their identity beyond parenting. With collectives like the Brooklyn Skate Moms coming together and bonding over their shared love of the sport, cultural narratives around female ageing and what it means to be a mother are evolving more broadly.
