 nights out, there’s little doubt that life under lockdown would’ve been a lot more difficult without tech. Yet people have mixed feelings about digital platforms. On one hand, they recognise how technology has made their lives much easier, but on the other, they worry about the ethical price they pay for this convenience. In Australia, 

 agree that technology has benefitted humanity, yet almost the same proportion (80%) want more oversight on the ethical questions around new tech. Young people are similarly wary of social media, with 

 saying they often daydream about what life would be like without it.

Data harvesting is a key bone of contention. While legislation such as the European Union’s GDPR has attempted to shield consumer privacy, people lack faith in its effectiveness and feel powerless against tech giants. Nearly 

 in the UK feel they have no choice but to sign up for digital services even if they have privacy concerns, and 45% feel there’s little point reading terms and conditions because companies will do what they want anyway.

 of Britons surveyed in 2019 wanted large digital companies to be subject to government regulation on how they use people’s data, many people now feel a moral duty to cooperate with Big Tech by sharing health information and participating in contact-tracing initiatives. Indeed, 

 would share their health status data during the pandemic to monitor contagion. As 51-year-old Londoner James told Canvas8: “I’m comfortable with my data being used because there is a tangible and real benefit in terms of saving lives.”
