Sports fandom was growing before the pandemic, with many people following highly marketised sports like

In the UK, for example, American sports fandom stood at 16.2 million, and viewership skyrocketed in the 2020 season. But as the globe was locked down, societal change continued apace. Rising awareness and anxiety about systemic racism and sexism, for example, shone a spotlight on industries that have been slow to change. It goes some way to explain why younger people aren’t engaging with sports as much as older generations: only 

 of Gen Zers say they are ‘passionate’ sports fans. With the sports industry getting back on track following the end of restrictions, it’s facing a world and fans that have changed.

Not praised for its progressive values, the sports industry has often lagged behind cultural developments. But now people don't simply want to watch their favourite games – they want their sports, clubs, heroes, and brands to reflect their values. In fact, 

 want brands that tackle social issues head-on rather than offering superficial gestures. They want to feel welcomed, and welcome diversity. As such, deconstructing biases is key, and the message has been transmitted widely. With

 is tackling the gender pay gap through its commitment to radical equity.

Beyond celebrating differences and encouraging consumers to engage with diversity, sports fans want a paradigm shift. People are fed up with empty words. English fans, for one, are 

 about the corporate presence in the country's football, and 

 wish they had more of a voice in the decision-making of their beloved clubs. Supporters want to help lay the land of a more inclusive and welcoming sports community. And increasingly, this new landscape will be online. Using
