Is regionalism still key to English football fandom?

Traditionally, football has been a key component of regional and local identity in England. But with the Premier League now defined more by wealth than locality, fandom is increasingly divorced from its local roots. What does this mean for the future of the nation’s favourite sport?

David Webber

Dr. David Webber is a senior lecturer on the Football Performance and Participation programme at Solent University and a member of the Lawrie McMenemy Centre for Football Research. David’s research continues his original interest in British politics and IPE but has also developed to examine the political, economic, and cultural changes that English football has undergone over the past 30 years.

Jared Tanna

Jared Tanna is an associate insight director at Canvas8. He leads Canvas8's cultural insight work for Google and has worked closely with government agencies such as the Irish Food Board and UK Sport. Outside of work, he’s either banging on about the latest film he’s seen or taking on an overly ambitious cycling route.

Louis Tozer

Louis Tozer is a senior behavioural analyst on the social sciences team at Canvas8. Trained as a social historian, he has a background in qualitative research, and after an early career spent at the Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory in Belgrade, he made the crossover into cultural insights. Outside of Canvas8, he can be found down the swimming pool, fixing his bike, or complaining to his friends.

Annie Corser

Annie Corser is the Senior Insights Editor at Canvas8. She's worked as a research editor in London since studying English literature and modern culture at KCL and UCL. She loves walking on the beaches of North Wales, solo trips to the cinema and getting lost in internet culture.
