Brands, public figures and vocal communities are all helping to break old taboos of speaking about mental health. Yet while more people are feeling like they understand such issues better, over half of Americans still see conditions like depression as a personal weakness.

According to research from insurance firm BlueCross BlueShield, diagnoses of depression in the US rose by 33% between 2013 and 2016. While this doesn’t necessarily mean more people are depressed, it shows they're more willing to seek treatment as the stigma attached to mental illness fades.
