Netflix and Amazon Prime may serve up countless films and shows on demand, but many Britons still choose to get off the sofa and go to the cinema, with indie and boutique venues account for a rising share of the UK box office. Why are people choosing them over home viewing and multiplexes?
Dr. Finola Kerrigan is a reader in marketing and consumption at the University of Birmingham. Her research covers marketing within the arts and cultural industries, arts production and consumption, digital identity and branding.
James Connor has five years experience as the policy executive at the UK Cinema Association. He leads on a number of key areas, including accessibility, cinema security and safety, cinema/film education, training and environmental sustainability. James regularly contributes to and supports the European Trade Association for cinema's marketing, circular economy and technology working groups and activity. In addition to this, James has project managed a range of sector-wide programs and initiatives, including a challenge fund looking to find smart solutions to subtitling in cinema and the launch of an accessible screenings listings website – the first of its kind.
Jason Wood is the creative director of film and culture at HOME in Manchester. He is also a professor of film at Manchester Metropolitan University and a visiting professor at the University of Salford.
