How engagement rings are becoming more sustainable

“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” so sang Marilyn Monroe, but with questions over ethics and the environment, mined stones are falling out of favour. Lab-grown diamonds and recycled precious metals are attracting Gen Y and Gen Z. We explore what’s behind the explosion in ethical engagement rings.

Jessica Warch is the co-founder and CEO of Kimaï, an ethical fine-jewellery brand based in London. Its unique designs using lab-grown diamonds and recycled gold have been worn by Meghan Markle and Emma Watson, among many.

Dr Sandra Wilson

Dr Sandra Wilson is a reader of Jewellery & Metal Design at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee and also co-editor of the new Journal of Jewellery Research. She is a contemporary jeweller and silversmith currently researching ways to recycle gold liquid from mobile phones.

From her studio in Birmingham, goldsmith and jewellery designer Ruth Chipperfield creates bespoke pieces as Ruth Mary Jewellery. She remodels heirlooms and repairs broken items, as well as creating her own lace-inspired designs.
