Why outlets for grief are on the rise

From death cafés and podcasts to end-of-life training and bereavement communities, the late 2010s and early 2020s have seen a surge in online and offline platforms, tools, and outlets for addressing our mortality. How does this reflect the changing practices around collective and individual grief?

Maggie Sawkins

Maggie Sawkins is a mediator and facilitator of ‘The Mindful Listener’ sessions. In mediating disputes over 25 years, she’s heard the struggles people have in common and witnessed how a mediation process allows them to hear each other and find a resolution. Her work creates a world where we can feel confident in speaking authentically and hearing others. She’s also a facilitator for Conversations About Death, Conversations About Beauty, and gallery tours, including Looking after our Mental Health at Wellcome Collection in London.

Bob Chiang

Bob Chiang is an end-of-life doula and mindfulness coach currently living in Buxton, Derbyshire. He was born and raised in Singapore, a place that offered a rich and diverse environment influenced by Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, and Christianity. Being a doula holds profound significance as he supports those on the journey of death and dying to ensure it is a positive, grace-filled experience, harmoniously intertwined with the beauty of nature.

A former Editor of the Time Out Group’s series of guides to Lagos and Abuja, Nana has over 20 years of experience as a writer, editor and cultural consultant. She Founded the digital platform, People’s Stories Project and is also an Associate Lecturer at Omnes Education (London), a liberal arts school that is headquartered in Paris. She has worked in a cultural capacity with global brands and organisations including Danish Film Institute (Copenhagen), Institute of International Visual Arts (Iniva), Rolls Royce Muse (UK), Design Indaba (South Africa) Pernod-Ricard (Paris) and is an ongoing consultant for British Council (UK).
