Why dark femininity narratives are taking over TV

From Killing Eve to Beef, dark femininity narratives have taken over TV and film, providing an expression of female identity that goes beyond more aspirational models of girlhood and womanhood. What do these stories represent and how can brands tap into more transgressive storytelling about women?

Dr. Janice Loreck

Dr. Janice Loreck is a lecturer in screen and cultural studies at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Her expertise centres on cinefeminism, women’s filmmaking, screen violence, and transgression. She is the author of Violent Women in Contemporary Cinema (2016), and Provocation in Women's Filmmaking: Authorship and Art Cinema (2023). Dr. Loreck is also a co-organiser and founding member of the Melbourne Women in Film Festival (MWFF), a not-for-profit event which supports and celebrates the work of women filmmakers and creatives.

Dr. Lisa Coulthard

Dr. Lisa Coulthard is a professor in the department of theatre and film at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Her research focuses on cinematic violence, film philosophy, genre cinema, action films, and feminism. She has published over 40 articles and chapters on topics related to these concerns.

Anna Bogutskaya

Anna Bogutskaya is a London-based author, critic, freelance film programmer, podcaster, and creative producer. She is the co-founder of the horror film collective The Final Girls and film programmer for the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Her first book, Unlikeable Female Characters came out in 2023.

Dr. Laura Minor

Dr. Laura Minor is a lecturer in television studies at the University of Salford. Her research explores women’s work in/on television, female authorship in TV comedy, and the intersection between gender and class in popular culture. Laura has been published in international journals such as Feminist Media Studies, the Journal of British Cinema and Television, and the European Journal of Cultural Studies. Currently, she is completing a monograph for Edinburgh University Press entitled Reclaiming Female Authorship in Contemporary UK Television Comedy. Laura has been interviewed by news outlets such as the BBC and CapeTalk for her expertise in gender, comedy, and the media.

Halina Reijn

Halina Reijn is a renowned director, actress, author, and producer. She is the winner of multiple awards including the Dutch Film Award, the Golden Calf for Best Actress, and the Courbois Pearl, an oeuvre award which honours an actress who has made an indelible impression on stage or in film and television. Her critically acclaimed directorial feature film debut Instinct (2019) was selected for several prestigious film festivals, while her Gen-Z slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) was her first Hollywood movie. She is currently filming an erotic thriller with Nicole Kidman.
